Usa Deschisa in Bucharest, Romania is the first/only emergency shelter for survivors rescued from human trafficking. The survivors are assisted in a 2-year program to help with room and board, medical, legal and counseling services along with access to vocation training. They are housed in a secure environment with 24/7 security.
The next phase is to offer the survivors a transition home to aid those who need that extra help before becoming independent and self-sufficient.

Prior to Covid, a corporate sponsor would fund the 5-day event where the staff and their families, survivors and their children would go to the Black Sea and conduct team building exercises with fun, crafts, music, worship as well as mini-courses for the survivors. The overall goal of the team building is for the survivors, who have been severely traumatized, to be able to open up to the counselors for their healing and restoration process. By telling their story to the attorneys, they can provide the necessary information to prepare for a case to convict the traffickers.
However, Covid stopped all that and finding another corporate sponsor has been a challenge due to the economic recovery following Covid. We are looking for a corporate sponsor who shares the vision and is interested in investing in theses survivors and their children. We are conducting a site survey in May 2024, and plan for the retreat in June/July 2025.
If you want to designate your donation towards this specific project, please indicate Shelter - Team Building in the memo.
Open Door Foundation in Bucharest, Romania has three sites they wish to install solar panels. As with everywhere, utility costs have been rising, and in Romania, there is no "exemption" for any nonprofit, nor is there any distinction between a for-profit business and a nonprofit business. Because Open Door relies solely on donations, the rising costs for utilities is consuming more of it, reducing the funds for room and board, medical, legal and psychological services, and vocational courses. One of the measures they wish to do is to install solar panels, as well as other means to help reduce energy costs.
